Discover Epirus, step by step

There is a unique way to truly get to know Epirus: by walking it. Far from the noise of cars, where dense vegetation meets alpine landscapes and rivers have been carving the rocks for millennia, lies the true soul of this land.

Ioannina serves as the ultimate crossroads for hiking enthusiasts. At Lithia Hotel, we frequently have the pleasure of hosting walkers and nature lovers from all over the world, offering them the ideal "base" for their excursions. We have gathered for you the top routes, ranging from relaxed strolls to demanding alpine ascents, all located just a stone's throw from our hotel.

1. The Epic Ascent to the Dragon Lake of Tymfi

This is undoubtedly the "Holy Grail" of Greek hiking. A challenging but deeply rewarding route that transports you to a landscape resembling a movie scene.

The Route: It begins at the village of Mikro Papigo (approximately a 50-minute drive from Ioannina). After about 3 hours of continuous uphill hiking, you reach the Astraka Refuge (at 1,950 meters), the perfect spot to rest and recharge.

The Destination: After another 1.5 hours of hiking from the refuge, you will come face-to-face with the Dragon Lake (Drakolimni) at an altitude of 2,050 meters. A serene lake surrounded by sheer, towering peaks, in whose waters live the alpine newts – small amphibians that resemble miniature dragons.

Difficulty Level: High (requires good physical fitness).

2. Crossing the Vikos Gorge

The Vikos Gorge is not just an impressive geological phenomenon, but also a Guinness World Record holder as the deepest canyon in the world in proportion to its width. Crossing it is a true once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The Route: The classic trail starts from Monodendri village and ends at Vikos village. Descending into the riverbed of the gorge and walking beneath the vertical, imposing cliffs is an absolutely awe-inspiring experience.

The Highlights: The dense, lush vegetation, the absolute silence, and, of course, the final stretch where you will find the Springs of Voidomatis with their icy, crystal-clear waters.

Difficulty Level: Moderate to High (the trek lasts between 6 and 8 hours).

3. The Historic Vradeto Steps & Beloi Viewpoint

If you want to combine hiking with local history and exquisite architecture, this route is the perfect choice.

The Route: The Vradeto Steps (Skala Vradetou) is a stone-paved path of exceptional craftsmanship, featuring about 1,100 steps, which connects Kapesovo village with Vradeto. Until the 1970s, it was the only way for the residents of Vradeto to connect with the rest of the world.

The Destination: Once you reach Vradeto, continue toward the "Beloi" viewpoint. From this natural balcony, you will enjoy the most breathtaking, unobstructed panoramic view of the Vikos Gorge from above.

Difficulty Level: Moderate (approximately 3-4 hours in total).

4. Mitsikeli: The "Balcony" of Ioannina

You don't need to travel far from the city for an authentic mountaineering experience. Mount Mitsikeli rises like a natural wall directly above Ioannina.

The Route: There are various trails (such as the historic Vlachostrata) starting near the village of Ligiades. As you ascend toward the summit, the landscape becomes increasingly alpine.

The Destination: The summit offers a spectacular, bird’s-eye view. All of Lake Pamvotis, the Island, and the entire Ioannina basin are literally spread out at your feet.

Difficulty Level: Moderate

Relaxed Strolls (For all fitness levels)

If strenuous hiking is not your style, there are beautiful walking paths that require no specialized gear:

The Island Loop: Take the boat over to the Island of Ioannina and walk the perimeter path right next to the water, listening only to the soothing sounds of the birds.

The Frontzos Peri-urban Forest: Just a few minutes from the city center, this forest offers lovely, shaded pathways, perfect for a relaxing morning stroll.
